Best Arguments for Which To Choose- Mac or PC

By

After the back and forth of commercials from both companies, we’ve all probably been forced to ask: Mac or PC? Both seem to have strong and weak points, and we all certainly know people who strongly prefer each, so this article is intended to help put the strengths and weaknesses of both in one place, to help you make up your own mind from the facts. For what it is worth, there are a few important things to keep in mind when making up your mind between Mac or PC: they both generally use Intel processors, they both buy memory, hard drives, and graphics cards from the same group of manufacturers, and they are both made by companies who belong to the top 5 computer manufacturers in the world. It helps put the whole PC or Mac competition in perspective, no?

Mac or PC - Who Wins?

In This Corner: The Mac

Mac’s nowadays tend to lean towards aluminum cases, usually lighter and thinner in construction. They tend to come installed with batteries that run longer on the same charge. Despite the pro-PC hype about cheaper item costs, it turns out in the Mac vs. PC war the Mac actually costs less than equivalently endowed PC laptop most of the time. The Macs are said to be less prone to viruses and direct security violations than are PCs. The operating systems on Macs tend to be more stable and less eccentric in their problems. Macs have, on average, better service records than most PC manufacturers. Macs are said to be simpler and easier to use, and they don’t generally come loaded with a bunch of trialware that you aren’t going to want. Add to that the support provided by the Apple Store, and the Mac makes its case pretty well.

In This Corner: The PC

PCs are many and varied in their forms, and for a lot of people, this is a considerable strength. You can purchase a number of specialized models, coming with different combinations of input and output devices. You can build your own PC from components, and generally, when doing so, you can shop around for the most inexpensive parts. PCs have more compatible accessories, and also have a much wider selection of games and business software available to them. More PCs are used in business than any other computer, so experience with them is useful for the workplace. PCs have a better backwards compatibility in terms of software-hardware match ups. And of course, PCs, being more numerous, have a larger support community. All good arguments for the PC.

The Winner?

As we said earlier, this article isn’t about telling you what sort of computer to buy, so you’ll have to decide for yourself whether it will be a Mac or a PC for you. A few years ago, the arguments would have been easier to sort through: Windows Vista was a stinker a lot of people dislikes, so the Mac had less of a case it had to make, but now, with Windows 7, the two are relatively neck and neck again. Image is still an issue, and Apple products to send a certain lifestyle-message when in public, but for those that aren’t concerned about such things, you really need to just take a look at what your system will be used for, and choose accordingly. Good luck!

I have a foot in both camps; started out with a Mac, upgraded to Windows Vista and recently got myself a second hand iBook. I also have an iPod Touch, which I think is absolutely great. So yes, I do own a Mac and am proub of doing so...

Um, MAC ONLY HERE!! LOL I've used a Mac since they arrived on the scene. I've used PCs some, a little here and there but really don't care for them. But to each his own...

Nice article. I think you present both sides fairly, and for those who are teetering, they can do a little additional investigation and decide.

Welcome to HP! You're a good writer, and I'm sure you'll do well here. Looking forward to more good reads!
